In Kitui County, a remote adult education center recently celebrated its first month of evening classes powered entirely by a new solar mini-grid. Over 60 adult learners—many of whom previously balanced farming and household chores—now study under bright LED lights instead of relying on dim kerosene lamps.
Local teacher Mary Nduku says, “Our students arrive with notebooks in hand at dusk. Now we can cover more material, and attendance has jumped. People feel safer, and children join their parents to learn together.” The mini-grid project also provides charging stations for mobile phones and lights in neighboring homes, extending benefits beyond the school.
Community members report that the reliable electricity has inspired micro-enterprises: a small tailoring shop and phone-charging kiosk launched nearby, creating jobs and additional income. Village elder Isaac Ngugi notes, “When the sun sets, the village used to go quiet. Now, the lights bring hope. Families study, businesses operate, and our children see a brighter future.”
